Macario Ortiz was the first potter in Mata Ortiz to introduce graphite into the
pottery making process creating the intensely black pottery made other than
by reduction firing. Macario has always been willing to experiment with his
pottery-making, and this particular piece, with it's eagle-shaped mouth is
unlike anything we have seen before.
Macario has won multiple awards for his pottery including 1st place in this
year's 2007 Concurso de Mata Ortiz in the Zoomorpha category.
