Juan Torres - Capula, Michoacan
Some would think it rather morbid, having your shop next
to a cemetary while making figures of dead people. As
we visited Juan Torres reknowned shop
La Candelaria,
in
Capula, it seemed very appropriate.

This exceptional and highly prestigious painter and
sculptor, born in Michoacan, has always been fascinated
by Death. Death is a constant in his work, it appears
everywhere in the shape of symbolisms or skeletons and
skulls. In 1982 Juan discovered the wonders of clay and
starts creating "
Catrinas".

Like fellow
Capula artist Fidel Avalos, Juan was heavily
influenced by
Jose Guadalupe Posada. This piece is
museum quality.

You may have noticed a pecularity in the two pictures at
left. The picture on the furthest left appears to have her
eyes closed, while the picture near left has her eyes wide
open. Each picture was taken under different lighting
conditions, so I'm assuming this is what caused this
phenomonon...she has been well behaved since she
arrived from DHL.
